Upper School College Counselor

Job Description

The College Counselor develops and administers a comprehensive program that promotes and enhances academic, personal, social, and career development for scholars in their respective grade levels. S/He helps scholars evaluate their abilities, interests, and talents to develop academic and career goals. The ideal candidate will bring a passion for the mission of Classical Prep, an understanding and respect for the culture, and experience working in a school setting that fosters a love for learning. The college counselor will meet with scholars during their College Prep course, which meets daily. 


Overview

  • Position: Full-time
  • Work Schedule: 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. daily, 192 days, plus occasional nights, weekends, and summer hours as deemed necessary

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Rhetoric College Advisor plays a crucial role in guiding scholars through the college preparation process, fostering their academic and personal development. This position involves working closely with scholars, parents, and faculty to ensure that all scholars are equipped with the necessary tools and resources to navigate college admissions and career planning successfully. The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to scholar success and a passion for education.

  • College Application Guidance: Assist scholars in the college application process, including research, selection of schools, and submission of applications.
  • Scholarship and Financial Aid Support: Work with scholars to identify scholarship opportunities and provide guidance on financial aid applications, including FAFSA and CSS Profile. Ensure service hours are accounted for accurately in myscholar.
  • Individualized Counseling: Conduct one-on-one sessions with all Rhetoric scholars to assess their interests, strengths, and aspirations and help them set academic and career goals.
  • Workshops and Presentations: Organize and lead workshops and parent information sessions on college readiness topics, including early action process, essay writing, interview preparation, and time management.
  • Academic Progression: Collaborate with academic advisor to ensure Rhetoric scholars are selecting appropriate courses and tracking their progress through these courses.
  • Transcript Evaluation: Review and interpret scholar transcripts to advise on course selection and academic pathways.
  • Standardized Testing Support: Ensure scholars are aware of and prepared for standardized testing requirements (e.g., SAT, ACT), including registration and study resources.
  • College Visits and Tours: Coordinate and lead college tours, both virtual and in-person, to expose scholars to different campus environments.
  • Parent Communication: Maintain open communication with parents to keep them informed about college planning processes and to address any concerns.
  • Networking: Develop and maintain relationships with college admissions representatives and local community organizations to support scholar opportunities.
  • Data Management: Track scholar progress and outcomes related to college applications and admissions.
  • Alumni: Maintain relationships with Classical Prep graduates and manage the alumni database.

Qualifications, Skills, and Knowledge Requirement

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Experience: Previous experience in a school setting, preferably in college advising or counseling.
  • Skills:
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Excellent organizational and time management abilities.
    • Ability to work collaboratively with scholars, parents, and staff.
    • Familiarity with college admissions processes and financial aid resources.
    • Ability to plan, organize, and implement meetings involving a variety of topics and personnel

Overtime Eligibility

This job is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with Classical Preparatory School’s evaluation rubric.
